This travel report was compiled by Edmund Gripenhielm (1675–1724), a Swedish nobleman and mining official whose career was closely connected to the state mining administration. The son of the military officer and nobleman Edmund Gripenhielm and Anna Rålamb, he studied at Uppsala University before entering Bergskollegium. Supported by a royal travel pension intended to strengthen Swedish mining expertise, he embarked on an extensive study journey through northern and central Europe. The knowledge gathered during this tour formed part of his professional preparation and preceded his later appointment as bergmästare in Skåne.
Along the report of Erik Odhelius, the report is one of the most detailed technical surveys of the late 16th century, preserved among Bergskollegium’s travel accounts. Beginning with visits to Swedish mining and industrial sites, including Sala silver mine, Dylta sulphur works, Andrarum alum works and the coal-bearing district of north-western Skåne, Gripenhielm travelled through Denmark, Hamburg and Berlin before reaching the major mining regions of the Harz, Saxony and Bohemia. Throughout the manuscript he presents himself not as a tourist or antiquarian, but as a careful observer collecting practical knowledge for the benefit of the Swedish Crown and the mining administration.
Particularly extensive sections are devoted to the mining districts of the Harz, Hartzgerode and Mansfeld. Gripenhielm provides detailed descriptions of copper-shale mining, underground working methods, timbering, charcoal production, ore dressing, roasting and smelting, as well as silver separation and lead metallurgy. He also records geological observations, including the structure of ore-bearing strata and the occurrence of coal seams, iron ores and copper-bearing deposits.
The largest portion of the manuscript concerns the mining regions of Saxony and Bohemia. Freiberg receives especially detailed treatment, including lengthy accounts of mine organisation, drainage adits, pumping systems, ore processing, silver smelting and administrative structures. Other important mining centres discussed include Altenberg, Ehrenfriedersdorf and Schneeberg, noted respectively for tin mining, arsenic manufacture and cobalt production, as well as Johanngeorgenstadt and Joachimsthal, where Gripenhielm examined silver-bearing ores, cobalt deposits and contemporary mining methods.
A distinguishing feature of the report is its close attention to metallurgical practice. Gripenhielm records furnace designs, roasting methods, ore beneficiation techniques, silver refining procedures, copper smelting operations and the manufacture of cobalt pigments, sulphur, vitriol and arsenic. The manuscript also contains observations on mining machinery, water-management systems, salt production, charcoal supply and the economic organisation of mining enterprises.
The volume provides a uniquely detailed account of mining technology and metallurgical knowledge in northern and central Europe around 1700. At the same time, it offers insight into how Bergskollegium and the Swedish state sought to acquire technical expertise through foreign study travel. Gripenhielm’s report stands as both a survey of European mining practice and a record of the knowledge-gathering missions that underpinned Sweden’s ambitions as a major mining power in the early eighteenth century.
