Anton Swab (1763–1809) belonged to one of Sweden's leading mining families and devoted his entire career to the service of the mining administration. After enrolling at Uppsala University in 1776, he completed a dissertation on Swedish mining and entered Bergskollegium as an auscultant in 1779. He subsequently advanced through a succession of technical and administrative appointments, becoming vice notary in 1783, mine surveyor (gruvmätare) in 1784, geschworner in 1787, and bergmästare in Falun in 1794. Shortly before his death he was appointed assessor in Bergskollegium. Swab combined practical mining experience with exceptional technical ability and was widely respected as a mining specialist. In 1793 he was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

The present manuscript records the results of a state-sponsored study tour undertaken in 1792 through the mining districts of Saxony and Upper Hungary. The report belongs to a long Bergskollegium tradition of technical travel, but it was produced at a time when Swedish mining science had become increasingly specialised and quantitative. Unlike many earlier travel accounts, which mixed descriptions of mines with broader observations on society and commerce, Swab's report is overwhelmingly technical in character and is intended as a systematic investigation of mining geology, mine engineering, ore dressing and metallurgy.

The largest part of the volume concerns the mining districts of the Harz Mountains, Freiberg, Altenberg, Zinnwald, Sangerhausen, Mansfeld and other important mining centres in Saxony and central Germany. Swab discusses geological formations, ore veins, host rocks, mining methods, drainage systems, pumping machinery, timbering, ore dressing works, smelting furnaces and the organisation of major mining enterprises. Particular attention is devoted to the structure and behaviour of ore veins, their relationships to surrounding rock formations, and the effects of intersecting veins and faults upon mineralisation.

Compared with the travel reports of Edmund Gripenhielm, Henric Kalmeter and even Alexander Funck, Swab's observations are notably systematic. He pays close attention to geological descriptions, mine measurements, ore grades, production statistics, labour costs and technical terminology, often comparing conditions between districts. The report therefore reflects the growing influence of late eighteenth-century mining science and the increasingly professional character of mining administration.

A distinctive feature of the manuscript is its detailed treatment of mining technology and ore processing. Swab records pumping systems, water-management works, mine transport, hoisting machinery, crushing and washing systems, amalgamation techniques, smelting operations and the organisation of large mining and metallurgical complexes. His discussions of the great mining districts of Saxony and Upper Hungary provide valuable insight into some of the most technologically advanced mining regions in Europe at the end of the eighteenth century.

The volume is therefore both a survey of the principal mining districts of central Europe and a document of the increasingly scientific methods through which late eighteenth-century Swedish mining officials sought to acquire and evaluate technical knowledge abroad. It stands at the transition between the descriptive travel report of the early eighteenth century and the specialised technical investigation characteristic of nineteenth-century mining science.
